a letter to the community regarding community safety

Dear members of the Breasties' community,
The Breasties is founded on community. At our core, we believe in creating safe spaces, empowering individuals to tell their stories, and creating connections for those who need it most.
In recent months, there was an incident in which community safety was called into question. We have thoroughly investigated this incident, while also maintaining the privacy of those involved. As a result, appropriate measures were taken based on the needs of those involved. We want to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that our community members feel both welcome and safe at all of our events both online and in person.
Listening to the stories of fellow Breasties is a core value of our community, but we must remember that the only story we have the right to retell is our own. We want to take this moment to remind everyone to respect the privacy of fellow Breasties and to refrain from discussing the personal matters of others in the community. The Breasties has a zero-tolerance policy on community “gossip” and breaching privacy; as it forfeits that individual and the community's right to feel safe and respected. We ask you to be mindful and reflective of gossip and the harm it can cause to vulnerable members in the community.
As an organization, we commit to transparency, while always protecting the parties directly involved. We may not always directly communicate intimate details of issues because we are prioritizing safety and privacy. Make no mistake that we take each matter very seriously and we want to make clear to all that there is resolution to community issues. If the resolution is not satisfactory, that resolution evolves.
In a continued effort to hold our organization accountable, we have created The Breasties’ Community Code of Conduct. This resource, available on our website, publicly details our values – values that drive and define what the Breasties is and what we hope it will continue to become. We encourage you to read it, and embody it, as it will be implemented within every Breastie space both online, and in person, once that resumes. We must work together as a community to ensure that The Breasties continues to be a safe space in which to communicate, collaborate, and connect.
While addressing community safety, we would also like to state how we are committing to keeping the community safe during the ongoing global pandemic. With our community being uniquely at risk, we have decided to not have any in-person meetups or events for the remainder of the year. We hope to resume in-person events and support in 2021 - we will continue to carefully monitor the situation and update the community as decisions are made.
Finally, we want to reiterate that we are here to move mountains, while creating a safe space for everyone. We have introduced a grievance process for the community moving forward, so there is a clear way to raise any concerns or suggestions for growth. This process will be followed so that every concern is treated equally.
With the organization values in mind, we will continue to be vulnerable, listen, and be open to feedback. The Breasties, as both an organization and a community, continues to grow. Thank you for standing with us as we simultaneously learn and grow during this time. Our differences, our similarities, our stories, make this community special and we will always protect all of our members fiercely.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Why did the organization decide to postpone all in-person events, cancel Camp Breastie and all wellness retreats for 2020?

At The Breasties, the health, safety and experience of our community is our top priority. Our in-person events are secondary to the health and wellbeing of the ones we love, which is you - our Breasties, our team, supporters, families and friends. After consulting with trusted healthcare providers, and our local, state, and federal health authorities, we decided it was in the best interest of the community to postpone and/or cancel these events.

  • Will there be virtual events in place of Camp Breastie and chapter meetups?

Yes! We really enjoyed hosting our very first Camp Breastie LIVE in June. Our ambassadors and community leaders are hosting dozens of virtual meetups each month.

  • Where can I find the Community Code of Conduct?

By heading to this link: Community Code of Conduct

  • How is The Breasties supporting our community during the time of physical distancing?

Our Breastie community is stronger than ever! Ambassadors are hosting virtual meetups often - so look out for these on instagram. All Breasties, no matter the location, are welcome to attend! We also hosted our very first Camp Breastie LIVE in June and hope to do more large-scale virtual events to support the community from afar.

  • How can I support the Breasties during this time?

Thank you for thinking of us! We are a nonprofit organization and we rely on funds from amazing donors and supporters like you to further our mission.
All donations are greatly appreciated and will directly fund new virtual programming initiatives and 2021 retreats, camp and meetups. Facebook fundraisers and other online fundraising initiatives are welcomed! Don’t forget to add us as your charity of choice on Amazon smile!
Also, did you know that when you purchase Breastie merch - this is a donation to our organization?
